The Alentejo is a central-south region of Portugal. This region fully covers the districts of Portalegre, Évora and Beja, the southern half of the district of Setúbal and part of the district of Santarém, thus being the largest region of Portugal. The Alentejo coastline reveals a landscape of high cliffs, with beaches ensconced in little bays and many ideas for surfing. Countryside aromas are everywhere, with herbs seasoning the fish, seafood and other regional dishes that are accompanied by excellent wines from this region, because the entire Alentejo lives at the rhythm of the land. Geographically, this region’s northern frontier meets the Centre Region, with Spain to the east, the Region of the Algarve to the south, and the Region of Lisbon and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. It covers an area of 31.551.2 km² (33% of Mainland Portugal) and has 760,098 inhabitants (2011 census)[1] (7.6% of Mainland Portugal and 7.4% of Portugal as a whole).
