Lisbon follows the course of the River Tagus spreading over seven hills, like Rome.
This particular urban layout gives the city an internal sinuous movement, made of flights of steps, steep descents, winding alleys and tourist points that leave no doubts in the minds of enchanted casual visitors and proud inhabitants of Lisbon.
Downtown Lisbon, the Baixa, one of the few flat districts, is the heart of the historical centre, where some of the daily activities and its flanks unveil the most picturesque neighbourhoods.
To the east, the ancient popular neighbourhoods of Castelo, Alfama and Graça still maintain intact the Moorish features of the city, to the west, Chiado, Carmo, Bairro Alto and Madragoa liven up the nights with their restaurants and bars brimming with originality and fascination due to the beauty of their monuments.
Recognised as one of the 10 most distinguished avenues, Avenida da Liberdade links Praça dos Restauradores to Marquês de Pombal. This avenue is 90 metres wide and 1,100 metres long, and includes gardens crossed by other roads. For shopping purposes, this avenue is the centre for the most elegant shops of the entire world.
Moving westwards along the coast we find Belém, the former fishing village now rich in historic and artistic monuments of absolute beauty.
