Primarily it was foreigners stood out in the purchase of hotels in Portugal, but national groups are also advancing in this field, in particular the cases of the acquisition of Hotel Aviz in Lisbon by the Porto Bay Group from Fundação Oriente, or the Vila Gale Group’s purchase of the Douro River Hotel, in Régua, which was undergoing bankruptcy proceedings.
According to Worx, over 50% of the hotel transactions in 2015 were conducted in Lisbon and 30% in the Algarve, with the amount invested by room varying between 51,000 and 140,000 Euros.
Investments in numbers
The restoration of old and ancient buildings, particularly in central and historic areas, has been one of the focal points of the new structures that are opening in Lisbon and Porto. A case in question in this area is Pousada de Lisboa, opened by the Pestana Group last July, in Terreiro do Paço, which in 2016 was distinguished as the best tourism project of the National Urban Renovation Award.

Both tourist demand and the hotel industry achieved their strongest growth ever in 2015, according to Worx. The consulting market research indicates that 52 new hotels were opened last year in the country, which gave rise to an increase of 3777 new hotel rooms.
